eLev at ECCE 2026

eLev attended the 2026 IEEE Energy Conversion Conference and Expo (ECCE) October 4– 8, 2026, in Vancouver, BC, CA, to present the following papers:

Suspension Converter Solutions for Bearingless Motors with Bridge-Configured Windings

  • Authors: Kamisetti N V Prasad, Siddharth Raju, and Eric L. Severson
    • Bridge windings allow high-power motor drives to run independently from magnetic levitation. However, conventional single-phase suspension inverters require massive DC-link capacitors at low speeds (over 50 mF for a 200 kW motor) to buffer 2ω power ripple. We introduced three high-frequency transformer (HFT) topologies that solve this energy storage bottleneck.

Force-Moment Model and Control Architecture for 6 DOF Bearingless Machines

  • Authors: Adonay Asgodom, Takahiro Noguchi, Wolfgang Gruber, Eric Severson
    • Bearingless machines that actuate across 6 degrees of freedom (DOF) enable fully integrated systems without external bearings, but determining the phase currents required to control forces and moments across all DOF remains challenging. However, linear current calculation approaches can cause undesired axial forces under certain loading conditions. We developed an exact force-moment matrix model and control architecture with axial force compensation to solve this control challenge.

We had lots of fun at the conference and reconnecting with colleagues from around the world.
