Mohamadhasan Mokhtarabadi and Eric Severson attended the 2026 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference & Expo (ITEC), June 10-12, 2026, in Novi, MI, to present the following paper:
Mohamadhasan Mokhtarabadi, Takahiro Noguchi, and Eric Severson, "Practical Control Implementation of Mid-Point Current Injection Drives for Bearingless Motors," 2026 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference & Expo (ITEC) & Electric Aircraft Technologies Symposium (EATS) (ITEC+EATS), 2026.
The publication is available in the ITEC+EATS proceedings.
This paper investigates the practical considerations of applying radial forces to a rotor by converting a conventional electric machine into a bearingless motor for cost-sensitive applications. We identified the Mid-Point Current Injection (MCI) drive as a suitable drive connection for this approach and proposed advanced control and self-sensing techniques to achieve decoupled and encoder-less motoring and suspension operations.
The conference was co-located with the CoilTech exhibition, providing an opportunity to learn about recent advances in electrification and coil-winding technologies and to introduce bearingless motor technology to a broader community of electric machines.
