Two New Journal Papers Published in Actuators
We are pleased to announce that two new journal papers from the eLev lab have been published in Actuators in July 2026.
System Identification and Sensor Calibration Methods for Commissioning Bearingless Machine Control Systems
- Authors: Daehoon Sung, Takahiro Noguchi, Anirudh Upadhyaya, Sang-Guk Kang and Eric L. Severson
- Journal: Actuators, 2026, 15(7), 388

This paper presents a step-by-step repeatable framework for commissioning bearingless machines. The proposed methods cover machine characterization, sensor calibration, and system identification, with experimental validation through command tracking and dynamic stiffness measurements. This work provides practical guidelines for reliable and efficient commissioning of bearingless machine control systems.
Universal Model and Control Framework for Bearingless Motors with Combined Windings
- Authors: Takahiro Noguchi, Mohamadhasan Mokhtarabadi, Kamisetti N. V. Prasad, David Prinz, Wolfgang Gruber and Eric L. Severson
- Journal: Actuators, 2026, 15(8), 410

This paper introduces a generalized modeling and control framework for six-phase bearingless motors with different combined-winding configurations. The proposed framework enables the simulation and control of various winding topologies using a unified MATLAB/Simulink model. The approach is validated through simulations and experimental demonstrations, providing a flexible foundation for bearingless motor control development.
The authors have also made the Simulink models used in this paper available online as open source; see this GitHub repository.
Congratulations to all the authors on these publications!
